Naming Covalent Compounds:

haay

First, what is a covalent bond? It is when two atoms share the same electron/s for stabilization, cool huh? Kinda like when people need their loved ones for support :'). Also, Covalent bond only happens between two non-metals unlike Ionic bonding which occurs in a metal and non-metal.

Naming Binary Covalent Compounds:

1. Name the first element.

--> e.g. C=Carbon

2. Change the endof the second element to "-ide".

-->e.g H=Hydride

Since Carbon has a charge of 2 and Hydrogen -1: C2+ H1-, they are required to exchange charges, making C1- and H2+.

3. Prefixes identifies the number of atoms. Put a prefix before the element.

Prefixes:      Number:

mono-        one

di-             two

tri-            three

tetra-         four

penta-        five

hexa-         six

hepta-        seven

octa-          eight

nona-         nine

deca-         ten

-->e.g. C1-H2+ is equal to Carbon dihydride.

Note: *"Mono-" should NOT be used in naming the first element. Example: N1- is NOT named as Mononitrogen.

       *The o or a of a prefix is usually dropped when the element starts with a vowel. Example: Nitrogen monooxide should be spelled as Nitrogen monoxide--- dropping the "o" of the mono.
