The Basic of Basic Chemistry...
Let me introduce you guys... Chemistry meet readers, readers meet chemistry.
Chemistry:..Uh what now?
---> It is the study of the properties, structure, composition and the changes in a matter. Chemistry deals with various elements and reactions for the production of new materials or matter... but honestly, experiments, explosions and the periodic table is its main concept for me, don't you agree?
Journey to the past:
Democritus (2, 500 years ago)- the one who first introduced atoms--- from the word "atomos" in greek, meaning "indivisible particle". He made theories about atoms which were later aproved and disproved by scientists.
Theories include: Nature consisted of atoms and the void that surrounds them
Atoms are physically, but not geometrically, indivisible
Atoms are indestructible and completely full
Atoms are the smallest particle
Aristotle- proposed the four elements which are fire, earth, water and air. One of the scientists who disagreed with Democritus.
John Dalton- proved that all matter is made of atoms.
Aproved theory of Democritus: Atoms are the smallest particle of which a substance is made of.
Disproved theory: Atoms are indivisible
J.J Thompson- made the "Plum-pudding model". He proposed that the electrons were embedded in a kind of cloud of positive charge. Suggested the presence of "electrons"
Ernest Rutherford- made an experiment called "Alpha particle scattering experiment" by using a thin sheet of gold foil. Suggested the presence of "protons and a nucleus"
The making of the Periodic Table:
Dmitri Mendeleev- debated "father" of periodic table. A Russian chemist who first noticed that there are some elements that have the same chemical properties, which led him to organize the first periodic table. His work was widely accepted because of his prediction that there are many elements that were not yet discovered, and leaving spaces for them on the periodic table.
Lothar Meyer- debated "father" of periodic table. A German chemist who arranged his own periodic table. Oddly enough, when Mendeleev's work was published, it resembled similarities with Meyer's, even though they don't have a connection with each other. Because of this, many people have debated on whether Meyer or Mendeleev is the rightfull "father".
Back to the present:
Now that we recalled how the sub-atomic parts were proved, let's name them:
-
Protons (Canal rays)- positively charged and focused on the center
-
Electrons (Cathode rays)- negatively charged and moves around the atom. Has the same number as the protons
-
Neutron- no charge and at the center along with protons
The three sub-atomic particles are also known as quarts. Quarts have six kinds:
-
Up
-
Down
-
Change
-
Strange
-
Bottom
-
Top
Isotopes:
---> these are forms of the same element that have the same number in protons but differ in the number of neutrons. Hence, they differ in the average atomic mass but have the same chemical properties.
Ions
--->There ae two types: Anion and Cation. Ions are atoms that have net electric charge because they either receive or lose electrons.
Well that's the basic of the basic, easy ain't it?
